Aspidistra elatior. The 'Cast-iron' plant is a rhizomatous perennial with ovate to lance-shaped, glossy, dark green leaves, 30-50cm long. In early summer it produces fleshy maroon coloured cup-shaped flowers at soil level. Although generally used as a houseplant this Aspidistra is frost hardy down to at least -5C and makes a great addition to the shady border.
