Hedychium greenii

Hedychium greenii.
Fairly hardy Ginger with lance shaped glossy, dark green leaves with deep maroon reverse 8-10 inches long borne on 6ft stems infused with the same moroon colour. In early autumn it bears flowers of an intense orange-red although it can sometimes be reluctant to flower unless the autumn is mild. Unusual in the genus this species may produce plantlets in the leaf axils or within the old flowers which can be separated and potted up to make new plants. I prefer to dig this one up in the autumn and grow it on in the conservatory where is makes an attractive foliage display during the winter months.
