GINGERS

The culinary ginger 'Zingiber officianale' has been cultivated for at least 2000 years and has given its name to one of the largest groups of flowering plants in the world. Many of these plants come from very tropical parts of the world and are only suitable for cultivation under glass in the UK. There are, however, many species that have a natural growth habit that make them adaptable to growing in our temperate climate. In their natural habitat some gingers grow in deep forest shade, others on the edge of forest clearings and even on river banks with their feet in water. Some are deciduous and are root hardy to very low temperatures making them ideal subjects for permanent planting with a good mulch or winter cover to keep out excess wet.

The plants listed below have all proved winter hardy in our garden with minimal protection. For those gingers that require over-wintering under glass click here.
