Bamboo
BAMBOO

Most of the bamboos grown in UK gardens originate from the foothills of the Himalayas or lowland China and Japan. Many are hardy to very low temperatures and easily survive and flourish in our temperate climate. Bamboos vary in size from really dwarf species like Pleioblastus pygmaeus with a maximum height of around 40cm to the truly enormous Phyllostachys bambusoides which can grow up to 22 Metres. They are very versatile in the garden and can be used as single specimen plants, as screens and hedges and the smaller species for underplanting shrubs and trees. Bamboos can be divided into the Pachymorph (clumping) types and the Leptomorph (running) types so it is important to learn something about the particular species that you are buying to be sure that it will serve your purpose.
